Wing Chun
|
Wing Chun, or any other martial arts for that matter. Has anyone ever tried or successfully learnt one?
Whilst enjoying a complimentary drop of red on my Emirates flight back home yesterday I caught a glimpse of the Japanese man's screen in front of me, and decided to watch it myself. The film is called ip man. Mike Tyson played a role in it. It was cheesy and generic like most Asian films but I enjoyed it and I am now going to start learning Wing Chun.
Has anyone else learnt this?
How many types of martial arts are there?

I've done a bit of Wing Chun, you need to do it 4 times a week to get good at it at least, but I don't have time with all the other stuff I do, but it's very good if done right.
Anyone that says Krav is good is talking complete shit

I took up Wing Chun two months ago and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I started with a 4 week taster course for an hour each week and kept going.

I did Wing Chun years ago for about 6 months. Very effective system that provides excellent self defence techniques.
But, as CS said, you really need to be doing it at least 3 times a week regularly to get any benefit.

If you want to learn how to defend yourself effectively, I heartily recommend Wing Chun. You don't have to be athletic or fit to do it - as others have pointed out, just go regularly. A lot of emphasis is on realistic sparring with pads etc, so you have a pretty good idea of what to do if somebody starts on you.

Some of it is ok it really depends on what you are learning it for. Wing Chun like various forms of Kung Fu in general is very underrated compared to other martial arts but it really does depend on who is teaching it.

There used to be a very good WG master somewhere over Woodford way I believe, he was a student of Dan Inosanto.

Lily Hammer 11:41 - No thats JKD
Trevor B - I studied JKD and Eskrima under Bob Breen who trained under Dan Inosanto.
Also studied Eskrima with Neil McLeod who held the British, European and World Eskrima titles at the same time. I did that for 4 nights a week for nearly 5 years.

Bruce Lee invented what he named Jeet Kune Do which is Cantonese and the English translation is The Way of the Intercepting fist.It was basically a mish mash of all the Martial Arts including Wing Chun and anything that stopped your opponent getting the better of you.Bruce Lee didn't enter organised competitions he was a pure street fighter and would eye gouge of go for the bollocks if that what it took.

yes mate i remember talking with you about this many moons ago!
i studied wado-ryu karate and jiu-jitsu for about 15 years. injuries then work/family got in the way. still miss it but don't think i could go back to something i was good at but would have to start over somewhat, always fancied wing chun so might think about finding a local academy and giving it a bash.

Yes mate, 15 years thats good going!
Wing Chun now would be good but i still fancy doing Eskrima again, bit of stick and knife sharpens the mind somewhat.

Any time I've seen an Eskrima demonstration it's always been hugely impressive, although I'm not sure I have the speed for that any more!
